Honor Opens Doors

During my June trip to Tanzania, the Lord led me to share several messages that included the idea of honor. The picture below is from a Sunday morning service in Arusha. Pastor Eric and leaders from the church helped me illustrate the men who came alongside of Moses during the battle with the Amalekites. I also used this story in one of the branch churches.

A simple truth was revealed as the man of God confronted the old high priest Eli, “Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained (1 Samuel 2:30 NIV).” Consider that fact for a moment – when you honor God, He honors you! To honor something, means we respect or value or highly esteem that thing in our life. God should certainly be deemed worthy of respect.

Honor is the essential key to receiving from God and has the power to greatly enhance your life. For this reason, the enemy of our souls has fiercely fought to eliminate it from our modern-day mindset and has, to a great degree, been successful. Honor carries with it great rewards—rewards God desires you to have in the here and now. Popular culture fights against the practice of honoring parents, leaders, and children. Honoring God releases tangible and intangible blessings of God in every arena of your life. Honor OPENS DOORS. Honor opens windows, gateways, channels, paves the way for God’s best. Honor benefits your relationship with God, your associations in the marketplace, your bond with a local congregation, your conversations with family members, your advancement in an occupation, your intimacy in your marriage.

When you honor God, He honors you, but when you dishonor Him, you limit your access to God’s best. When Jesus walked the rural paths of Palestine, He did numerous miracles – except for one particular area. “He [Jesus Christ] COULD NOT do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them” (Mark 6:5 NIV). That is a startling assertion. What was it that prevented Him from doing more? Jesus provides the answer in the preceding verse, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home” (Mark 6:4 NIV).

I don’t want to impede God’s desire to honor me. How about you? So, how do we honor God? Here are four practical areas:

#1 Honor God in congregational PRAISE and WORSHIP.
Honoring God in public worship may seem pretty basic, but how many come to corporate services for a multitude of other reasons? Real worship doesn’t occur until spirit touches Spirit. #4 Honor God with your LIFESTYLE.

Honor is an attitude, a manner of speech, a language, and a lifestyle.

“And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father” (Colossians 3:17 NLT)

Honor:

Stands at attention (American flag, anthem, pledge);
Bows in respect;
Serves with passion;
Prioritizes under pressure;
Gives with thoughtfulness;
Protects from slander;
Speaks with affection;
Looks past offenses;
Praises potential;
Believes the best;
Preserves unity.

Dad Baptized Me

Make the Right Lasting Impression

You have a lifetime of wisdom to share, just don’t try to let it all out at once. The next generation needs your wisdom, but often you will need to exercise patience for the right moment to impart it. Let your wise words build a bridge from your generation to another.

#8 PRESENCE

Be a REFUFE in times of trouble, a REJOICE-ER in times of achievement. Model Christ-like character. Jesus Christ lives in your life; you are a carrier of incarnational presence. Let His character and compassion be evident.

#9 TIME

Make sure you to teach your children and grandchildren to love God more than things, to trust God’s sovereignty and power – nothing is too hard for the Lord – and to realize God’s love for them.

Stop Nitpicking; Start Overlooking

Why Argue?

Why do I sometimes actually enjoy arguing? Why do I want to use argumentative tones when Patti and I actually agree about the subject we are discussing? Why do I pick at a point of contention instead of just letting the matter go? Why do I let myself argue like a fool?

“Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling.” (Proverbs 20:3 NLT)

Folks who knew me in high school and college probably recall that I liked to argue. Several jokingly chided me, “You should be a lawyer, argue all you want then.” I confess, the less sound my argument, the louder I tended to talk. My enjoyment of successful arguing my viewpoint was advantageous in FFA (yes, I was a “Future Farmer of America”) Parliamentary Procedure competitions, FBLA speech contests, and college debates. Yes, that picture below is of me in high school.

Liking to talk is not necessarily a bad thing for a “preacher” to enjoy. But wisdom suggests:

“Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people.” (2 Timothy 2:23-24 NLT)

I know what God’s Word says about avoiding quarreling, but I too often slide right into it. In the middle of the discussion, why do I forget that I am not the only person who has a right to his or her own stupid opinion?

Why do I feel the need to argue a point that I know I will not change? In the late 1800’s, American romantic poet James Russell Lowell advised, “There is no good in arguing with the inevitable. The only argument available with an east wind is to put on your overcoat.”

I have noticed that I tend to be more argumentative when I am tired or don’t feel well. Unfortunately, that was the case for me yesterday afternoon. Patti strongly suggested, “Greg, take something for that headache!” I wish I could replay some of yesterday afternoon, but that is NOT the way life works.

Why can’t I just let some matters slide? I wish I could click an undo button for some of my conversations. Wow, Greg, when will you learn to shut up?

Ouch! I think James nailed me there. Why do I argue unnecessarily? Because there is pride, stubbornness, and self-centered desires that still need to be weeded out of my life. I still need to yield areas of my mind, will, and emotions to Christ’s Lordship.

I need to clothe myself “with the new [spiritual self], which is [ever in the process of being] renewed and remolded into [fuller and more perfect knowledge upon] knowledge after the image (the likeness) of Him Who created it.” (Colossians 3:10 AMP) I am in need of renewal. Lord, help me!

Names are significant because names so often alter the way in which you see yourself, and sometimes, how world sees you as well.

New Name – New Status – New Future

Twenty-seven years ago (this weekend!), Patti and I stepped into Goldbro department store on Airport Road in Huntsville, Alabama to look at the rings in the jewelry section. Somehow, my mom had managed to tag along and walked behind us as we stepped into the jewelry section.

We stopped at the very first case and Patti pointed to a ring under the glass. She glanced at me and said, “That’s the one I want.”

“Okay, but that is the one I want.” I gulped as the lady behind the counter placed it on Patti’s finger. “Yes,” Patti said staring at the ring, “I like this one.”

I am not saying that we should all change our names like my wife did when she married me. But, I do think we should live up to our status as the Bride of Christ and to lives that honor His Name.

Patti and I spent quite a while discussing what we should name our children. Just after Patti got pregnant with our first daughter, my dad suggested I let Patti pick the name. “It will be a lot easier,” he said. But, I wasn’t quick to surrender my opinion in the matter. We talked and read namebooks and talked some more. That was before the proliferation of the internet, so we didn’t google names!

We finally decided to name our firstborn after Patti’s sister, but then we argued a bit as to the exact spelling of the name. I campaigned for the letter “z” to set her apart from her aunt. Ultimately, we resolved that Patti would choose the spelling of the name of our first child, and I would . . . agree to the decision. Rosalyn was given the name “Rosalyn”, but I chuckled when our daughter decided to go by the nickname “Rozy”. Yes, God always gives me much better than I deserve.

A name is much more than just a handy label for getting someone’s attention.

Parents living in Biblical days often gave a name to a child to make an announcement about that child or to communicate something through that child. Don’t Give Up Yet

Three strikes doesn’t mean I’m out for good. I am so thankful Heavenly Father is the umpire of my life. When necessary, God has a way of allowing me to take tests again and again and again. He intends for me to ace the exams.

As a student, I hated failing assignments. Even when I went back for masters and doctoral classes at Oral Roberts University, I felt tremendous anxiety to perform well. Dr. Grizzle handed back one of my papers with dreaded words something like “Please redo this assignment following the attached plan.” Somehow I missed the email with the updated requirements, and so I was left to do it again – THE RIGHT WAY.

I was the one who didn’t live up to the requirement. Thankfully, I had the chance to complete it the right way for a good grade.
